Whiteleaf Bowmen Archery Club

Archery in South Bucks

Whiteleaf is a friendly archery club serving High Wycombe and South Buckinghamshire. The club is located at a dedicated field near Lacey Green.

We welcome all levels of skill and experience, from competitive tournament archers to those who just enjoy shooting down at the club. Most members shoot either recurve or traditional longbow and many shoot both disciplines. We are now pleased to welcome any compound archers in the area, as members or visitors.

We hold an annual Club Championship for recurve, a separate Club Longbow Championship, and a Chairman’s Shoot especially for our novice archers.

We run two tournaments each year: a Club Open Shoot and an Open Longbow Tournament which has proved extremely popular since its inception in 1997.

We also run beginners’ courses and in the summer the club offers “Fun Shoots” for local groups such as Scouts, Round Table, & Ladies Circle, and for Corporate Team Building & Birthday parties. Club members volunteer their time to help out, and the nominal fees help to boost club funds for further information see the contact sheet.

Target Days and Shooting Times

The ground is at our sole disposal, which allows us unlimited archery 365 days a year. Official target days are Sunday, starting at 10:00am, and Wednesday and Thursday evenings, starting at 6:00pm, but members are free to shoot whenever they wish. The ground can accommodate up to twelve targets, and has permanently-marked distances for all the major Archery GB and FITA rounds.

Non members are always welcome to shoot with us at the field on payment of a £3.00 green fee and presentation of a valid Archery GB or FITA registration card.

During the winter the club uses a local village hall for indoor shooting on either a Wednesday or Thursday evening, with sessions starting at 5:30pm, 7:30pm and 9:30pm. For all shoot dates please see the events calendar.

Membership

Our membership year runs from the 1st of October until the 30th of September. From 1st November onwards, new member fees are offered on a pro rata month by month basis.
Please contact the membership secretary directly for all enquiries on membership fees.

Discounts are available for students (i.e. those in full time education, and upon presentation of a valid NUS card) and for families (where 3 or more from a family join).

Non-members are always welcome to shoot with us on the payment of fees as detailed above and on presentation of a valid Archery GB or FITA registration card.

Beginner’s Courses

Beginner’s Courses

New to archery and want to get started? Need a relaxing, sociable hobby to get you out of housework? Come to one of our beginner’s courses!

Our beginner’s course covers four lessons, and teaches you the basics of archery.

All equipment is provided. A qualified archery instructor/coach will lead the course, with help from experienced club members.

You will learn about safety, equipment selection, basic techniques and development of technique, scoring, etiquette and the next steps.
Also insurance included.

At the end, you can make an informed decision on whether you would like to pursue archery further. There is a minimum age of 12 years for those wishing to take part which allows for the need to have a certain level of strength and maturity.

We require at all lessons that a parent or guardian attends with the junior or vulnerable adult.

The club abides by the Archery GB policy for safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults.

The October course is currently full, our net course will be held in early 2025 and will be advertised on the website and our Facebook page when the dates are confirmed.

The course only costs £120 for adults over 25 years of age & £60 for persons under 25years or all ages registered disabled.  Advanced bookings only.

Please contact our Club Beginners Course Co-Ordinator (Joyce Capey) for more information at email: Beginners@whiteleafbowmen.org.uk

Fun Shoots

Fun Shoots

Whiteleaf Bowmen offer an archery experience for private and corporate groups, with one to one guidance from an experienced archer with the emphasis on fun.

When: A Fun Shoot can be booked for Monday, Tuesday or Friday evenings during the months of June & July. Starting time is at 6:30pm to allow an hour and a half of actual shooting time in good daylight.

Age & numbers: Ages from 11 to 80+ are welcome. With a maximum group size of 20.

Itinerary:

  • Each archer is provided with arm protection and basic equipment.
  • A few words on safety is followed by a demonstration of the basic technique to the group.
  • Each pupil will then start shooting with an instructor who will provide guidance as required.
  • We use low poundage bows so no great strength is required and the target is set at 10 to 12 metres away, so everyone will hit the target.
  • We aim to have no more than 3 or 4 pupils per target/instructor, to reduce waiting time.
  • After a few rounds we introduce a few games and a competition if the group wishes.

Cost and booking:

For private groups the cost is £80.00 (booking fee cheque) in advance and £5 a head payable on the day.

For Corporate groups the cost is £150.00 (booking fee cheque) in advance and £10 a head payable on the day.
